Manchester United told their UEFA Europa League fate with a warning for the future

Ten Hag’s side to play in Europa League with conditions

Manchester United FC will be able to participate in the UEFA Europa League competition in the upcoming campaign following UEFA’s decision on their future in the European second-tier league.

The Manchester Reds will be allowed to play in the Europa League, but the governing body has threatened that the governance will not be as lenient in the coming years.

Erik ten Hag’s side finished eighth in the Premier League following an inconsistent season in the English top tier; however, clinching the FA Cup means they would be able to compete in the European second-tier competition for the upcoming campaign. However, there were uncertainties regarding whether the English giants would be able to participate in the competition owing to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS ties to OGC Nice. United’s new owners own the French club as well.

A double-edged sword for United?

OGC Nice concluded the season in fifth place last season; however, UEFA regulations stipulate that two clubs owned by the same entity must not compete in the same European competition. Typically, in such a case, the club with a lower ranking in the table would have been demoted to UEFA’s tier-three competition, i.e., the UEFA Europa Conference League, which in the current context would be United.

However, the European regulating entity would let both clubs (Manchester United and OGC Nice) compete in the Europa League next season, per The Times. UEFA’s Club Financial Control Board will deliver the verdict around their multi-ownership stipulations later today.

There is an expectation that United will be given the go-ahead to participate in the Europa League with certain conditions; however, with the green light, the club will be handed a caution that similar leniency will not be extended in future years.
