Maguire and Shaw “progressing well” but face race for Euros fitness
England have set their sights on bringing the upcoming European Championship home, and in a boost to the Three Lions bid to kiss silverware in Germany, manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Manchester United defensive duo Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are “progressing well” amid their injury concerns.
Southgate will be hoping to see his side win the EURO’s after coming close to winning it at Wembley last time around. A sense of revenge and going a step further would drive the squad to land in Germany with a total focus on bringing football home.
Southgate sweats on United duo
Manchester United representatives Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have played integral roles under the current English gaffer. He has included the duo in England’s 33-man provisional squad for the upcoming tournament in Germany; however, both face a race against time to be fit when the business side of things comes around.
Both of them joined the English camp early to aid their treatment and give them a realistic chance at getting fit. The former Leicester City star has missed the final four games of the season for the Red Devils, while Shaw has barely featured in the recently concluded season, with the latest injury in mid-February keeping him on the sidelines.
Despite all the progress they are making, Southgate confirms that they will not be involved in England’s friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina later today. City defender John Stones and Arsenal’s star player, Bukayo Saka, will also miss the game at St. James Park.
Southgate, in his pre-match press conference on Sunday afternoon, said (via. Manchester Evening):
“All are progressing well. We are pleased with the progress they’ve made, but none of them will be involved tomorrow. Same tomorrow for Bukayo Saka and for John Stones. Everybody else will be involved.”
