Harry Kane is England’s greatest player, says Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney
In his latest interview with Gary Neville for The Overlap, Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney touched upon more matters of interest, including the legacy of Harry Kane. When asked about his take on Kane’s importance to the England side ahead of the imminent Euros in Germany, Rooney had this to say:
“I think he’s incredible.
“You look at all the goals he’s scored and the assists he’s added over the last few years as well. For me, I would say he’s England’s greatest-ever player.”

Listening to the former England captain and top goal-scorer, Neville replied, “England’s greatest-ever player? That’s some statement, especially from you…” after which the 38-year-old added:
“I believe it. There’s never any issues with him. He never misses games, he’s ultra-professional. That’s a common theme with the best players.”
Kane had been expected to leave Spurs ever since he signed a six-year contract extension with them in 2018. Both Man City and Man United remained interested in him, but Daniel Levy had other plans.
Kane has had quite the anomalous first season in Germany after his €100m move to Bayern Munich last summer. Despite providing 44 goals and 12 assists in 45 games across all competitions, the Englishman failed to help Bayern retain the Bundesliga title in over a decade, going trophyless in a season for the first time in that period.
The 30-year-old is set to remain in Germany in the summer to lead England at UEFA Euro 2024.
Some statement, that
For Rooney, one of England’s biggest-ever players, to come out and call Kane one of the greatest-ever star is some praise for the veteran Englishman, and it is not unwarranted.
The prevalent troll culture often makes one forget that, despite not having team trophies to boast about, Kane is and will go down as one of the greatest forwards of his generation.

Sadly, his legacy will be affected by whether he manages to win a team trophy or not. With three more years left on his Bayern contract, Kane would back himself to get that monkey of his back at some point.
