Javier Mascherano wants Alejandro Garnacho for Paris Olympics

According to a TNT Sports report, Javier Mascherano wants Alejandro Garnacho in his Paris 2024 Squad.

The former Argentina international and current U23 team coach will be looking after the Argentina men’s side heading for the Olympics in Paris and wants some experienced operators in his side.

Garnacho, 19, may not be experienced yet, but he is already part of the senior national team setup, from which Mascherano also plans to take Nicolás Otamendi and Julián Álvarez, having also requested for Enzo Fernández and Emiliano Martínez.

If picked up, Garnacho could miss out on getting any off-season rest. Having just finished the 2023/24 season with United, he is set to feature at the 2024 Copa América in the US, which is scheduled to run from June 20 to July 14.

The men’s football event at the Paris Olympics, meanwhile, is scheduled to be held between July 24 and August 9.

It is yet to be revealed whether Man United will allow Garnacho to play a second international tournament in the off-season this summer.

United will likely reject the plea

United aren’t the only ones worrying about the Olympics; clubs across the board are decidedly against sending their players to the Olympics unless the circumstances are exceptional.

Even Real Madrid, having not yet officially signed a deal with Kylian Mbappé, have reportedly told Thierry Henry that he will not be allowed to pick the French talisman for the home Olympics.

The congested fixture schedule only goes to show how poorly professional football is being administered across the globe, and given the Olympics’ historical affinity for amateurism, there’s no surprise why the affluent professional club football ecosystem has little regard for its football.

Unless Garnacho really forces their hand, expect United to outright deny him going to Paris for the Olympics in the summer.
