Wayne Rooney recently joined Gary Neville for an interview for the latest edition of The Overlap.

Among other things, the two discussed Rooney’s time in the US, about which the former United forward had an interesting story to tell.

When Neville asked him about the most famous person he had played golf with, United’s all-time top goal-scorer said this, sending the former United defender into a fit of laughter:

“[Donald Trump had] asked me to give his son [Barron Trump] football lessons, and [Barron] said, ‘Do you want to see my dad?’

“He took me up into the Oval Office and then from there, his PA was just texting – ‘Do you want to play a few holes [of golf?]’

“The maddest thing about it was we had [former New York mayor Rudy] Giuliani in the buggy behind us.

“Then there were about 50-100 golf buggies that were all security. There was a boat in the lake with snipers, there were snipers in the bushes, and I was like, ‘What’s going on here?!'”

Rooney spent time in Washington, DC, both as a player and manager of DC United.

The 38-year-old played 52 games for the MLS side between 2018 and 2019, providing 25 goals and 14 assists. He then managed them from July 2022 till the end of the regular MLS season of 2023.

A story for the ages

Rooney may not end up having a managerial career as glittering as his playing one, but he has certainly accumulated a fair few stories to tell his grandkids in the future, and the Trump golf one is right up there.

And who knows? Maybe we’ll see him ply his trade as a manager in MLS once again in near future.

Let’s be honest, though: he’s much more box office as a pundit than he’ll ever be on the sidelines by virtue of his regular-man personality despite having been one of the greatest footballers of his generation.
