Bayer Leverkusen not in for Cristiano Ronaldo, confirms Fabrizio Romano
In his latest Daily Briefing newsletter entry, football journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that, despite recent rumours, Bayern Leverkusen are not looking to make a move for Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.
Having recently lifted the DFB-Pokal trophy, Xabi Alonso’s men have wrapped up a historic season in Germany, having gone on undefeated in domestic club football while winning both the Pokal and the Bundesliga, thus ending Bayern Munich’s monopoly at the top.
In Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has resumed normal service in his first full season with Al Nassr. With Xabi Alonso having been his teammate at Real Madrid, links had started to emerge recently regarding a possible return for Ronaldo to Europe with Leverkusen.
However, the reputed Italian journalist has squashed those links, having had this to say on the matter:
“Congratulations to Cristiano Ronaldo for making history with his 35 goals in the Saudi Pro League – he’s the first player to become top scorer in four different leagues, having already done it in La Liga, Serie A and the Premier League. We’ve also had some interesting rumours about Ronaldo and Bayer Leverkusen because of his strong relationship with Xabi Alonso. They are good friends, but no – Leverkusen are not working on this deal, no one is working on signing Ronaldo because he is very happy at Al Nassr and is not planning to change.”
It is, true, however, that Ronaldo is on his way to Germany next month. The 39-year-old is set to lead Portugal at the 2024 Euros in an attempt to reclaim the crown that was his back in 2016.
No surprises there
It is not a surprise that Cristiano Ronaldo has started delivering the numbers we have become accustomed to over the years. A proper pre-season training schedule has helped the man shed away the lethargy of the 2022/23 season.
It is equally unsurprising, however, to find that Bayer Leverkusen have no interest in going after him. Let us not forget that Ronaldo now plies his trade in Saudi Arabia because he failed to find himself a Champions League-playing club both in the summer of 2022, when he was contracted to Man United, and in the 2023 winter transfer window, when he thought being a free agent would improve his chances.

The Xabi Alonso link makes for interesting paper talk, but that is all it’s going to remain. The Spaniard has proved himself too shrewd to make moves like these.
