Thomas Tuchel in line to get Manchester United job upon Erik ten Hag’s dismissal
Thomas Tuchel has emerged as one of the few candidates whose name has been linked with the Manchester United job, according to a Guardian report.
The German coach is just coming off a stint at Bayern Munich, which many deem to be unsuccessful given his is the first Bayern side in 11 years to not lift the Bundesliga title.
However, Bayern’s disastrous attempts at finding a replacement recently saw the Bavarians enter negotiations with Tuchel himself, asking him to continue, but the 50-year-old declined.
Tuchel is now being considered as a potential successor to many a manager across Europe, with Old Trafford emerging as one of his potential destinations.
The INEOS ownership at Man United is expected to make a managerial change in the summer and dismiss Erik ten Hag regardless of what happens in the FA Cup final.
Apart from Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Gareth Southgate, and Kieran McKenna have also been linked with the Old Trafford seat.
With the FA Cup final widely expected to be Ten Hag’s last game as Man United manager, he would want to leave the role with a second trophy in the bag, while also delivering the Red Devils European football for next season.
In the short term, United could do worse than Tuchel
Of all the managers United are being linked with, Tuchel is the one likeliest to work out in the short term.
Here is why: United don’t have in place a Director of Football yet. They were willing to wait out for Dan Ashworth until the end of the year, but his arrival is now up in the air due to recent developments, which saw some mails leaked between Ashworth and Berrada and could see United not only miss out on their target but get further sanctions as well.
Regardless, the directorial role remains vacant, and as long as that is the case, United are better off not considering long-term options. Even if they were to get themselves a manager in the name of “long-term process”, there’s a very good chance that the manager would be dismissed not too long after the arrival of a football director, whenever that happens.
Tuchel’s appointment would be made expecting a short-term stint given his own recent history. But his recent history also shows him improving existing players in a team, ioncorporate them in a system to get the most out of them, and deliver trophies.
