Mauricio Pochettino would be interested in Manchester United job if Erik ten Hag gets the sack
According to journalist Jason Burt, as reported by Give Me Sport, Mauricio Pochettino would “love” the managerial role at Manchester United if it were offered to him.
United have recently been reported to be looking to axe the current manager, Erik ten Hag, after their 2023/24 campaign comes to an end on Saturday with the FA Cup final against Man City.
The Red Devils’ worst Premier League finish since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement 11 years ago means winning the FA Cup trophy will not be a miracle big enough to save the Dutchman’s job.
Pochettino, himself recently sacked by Chelsea under remarkable circumstances despite a strong end to the season, has been linked with the Old Trafford gig many times over the years. With his stock currently in decline, he is expected to jump at the opportunity if the club’s INEOS ownership were to offer it to him.
Apart from Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate, and Kieran McKenna have also been linked with the job currently held by Ten Hag.
Regardless of his future, Ten Hag is expected to lead the United men out on the Wembley pitch this Saturday in what will be his third cup final in two seasons.
Pochettino won’t be an ideal solution, and here’s why
One can consider Pochettino getting the sack from Chelsea a wild call by the London side, but that does not make him ideal for the job at Old Trafford, at least for now.
United do not have in place a director of football yet. They were willing to wait out for Dan Ashworth, but recent developments mean they may have to suffer some punishment and also look for another person altogether.
In any case, without a director in place, getting a “process” manager will be all but futile, and if recent reports coming out of Chelsea are to be considered, United would be better off not pursuing the 52-year-old for now.
