Gutted Rashford hasn’t made England’s EURO squad, says André Onana
As quoted by BBC Sport, André Onana in a recent interview discussed, among other things, Marcus Rashford and his exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional England squad.
Southgate, interestingly linked to the Man United job, unveiled recently the provisional squad that will partake in the upcoming pre-Euros friendlies for England.
This squad will be cut down to 26 after the friendlies for the Euros.
Onana had this to say regarding his 26-year-old teammate’s exclusion:
“We are talking about the same player. So now he’s a bad player? No. You can have a bad season or a bad start but the most important thing is how you end.
“Rashy, for me, is one of the best players in the world. But he is facing difficulty. It’s not only him and me but the whole club.
“But he will come back. I know my killer will score some important goals for us. Hopefully against City he will score two and we win the FA Cup.”
Rashford has followed up last season’s 30-goal tally with just 8 goals and 5 assists from 42 Man United appearances this season across all competitions, prompting his exclusion from the England squad.
However, Rashford is expected to at least make the Man United squad for this Saturday’s FA Cup final against Man City at Wembley Stadium.
Onana is being a good teammate; Southgate has done nothing wrong
Onana’s recent interviews have thrown a good light on him in terms of how defensive he has been for his teammates’ bad form this season.
It’s a good quality to have, and one can only laud him for his diplomacy, but Onana’s is not an opinion Gareth Southgate should pay any heed to.
The positions Rashford occupies for England are positions in which Southgate has much better options to choose from, players who have put up much better numbers than Rashford this season.
With the Euros expected to be Southgate’s England swansong, he has ostensibly taken hard calls with his call-ups this time round, having also left out Jordan Henderson after his underwhelming showings in Saudi Arabia and later at Ajax.

Rashford has been left out of the England squad for very understandable reasons. It’s now up to him to earn his caps back by virtue of his performances going forward.
