Andre Onana claims he was the best goalkeeper in the world when Manchester United signed him
It has been a weird season for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Red Devils paid £47.2m for the 28-year-old last summer. It was supposed to be a competitive debut season for the Cameroonian but things have not gone according to plan.
Manchester United have failed miserably and more often than not the critics have found a way to blame Onana. The Cameroonian’s reputation has somewhat taken a hit, here’s what he had to say about it while talking to BBC.
“I arrived as the best goalkeeper in the world and ‘boom’ it went down. It was like ‘what happened?’,”
“But that is how difficult football is sometimes. It depends if you want to stay down there or stand up and fight.
Onana added that he knows where he comes from and will continue to stand and fight against the critics. The 28-year-old is confident that he will be able to flip the narrative if he continues to persevere.
Contrary to popular belief Manchester United would be a lot worse off if it wasn’t for Andre Onana. The 28-year-old is actually a very good goalkeeper, he’s just not surrounded by the most defensively sound bunch of footballers.
There are a lot of gaps in the Man United defence and their opponents often find a way to penetrate and let off at their goal. So, Onana deals with a ton of shots in each game, and not all of them can be saved.
People would view the Cameroonian in a better light if the Man United defensive line wasn’t so easy to penetrate. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to say that Onana is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.
