Newcastle star slams VAR for a controversial call against Manchester United
Manchester United finally put up a much-needed win on the board as they beat Newcastle United 3-2 to take all three points in their last game at Old Trafford this season. Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo, and Rasmus Hojlund all chipped in with a goal each to put their team up.
Young Diallo even got himself an assist, for playing a ball into the box that stumbled its way to Kobbie Mainoo’s feet. However, the game could’ve ended up as a tie if Anthony Gordon had gotten a penalty during the first half.
He was caught from behind by Sofyan Amrabat, unfortunately for him Casemiro made a brilliant tackle to strip him off the ball just as these events unfolded. The Newcastle star was understandably angry about the situation. Here’s what he had to say. (h/t The Guardian)
“I told my teammates it was a clear penalty. I don’t understand the point of it [VAR], either get rid of it or get better – it’s that simple.”
Gordon also said that he knew it was a penalty straight away which is why he didn’t appeal and waited for VAR to reward it. However, VAR is too inconsistent and unreliable to rely on for such big moments of the game.
It will be a lesson learnt for Gordon who clearly isn’t a fan of VAR. A lot of other teams aren’t either and there will soon be a vote to remove it from the Premier League starting from next season.

However, VAR is a part of the game for the time being, and as long as it’s around there will be delays in the game and bad calls being made all the time. Hopefully, the Newcastle star doesn’t let this demotivate him.
