Man United legend almost missed out on the historic treble as he was close to leaving the club
Manchester United did the impossible back in the 1998/99 season. After not winning a single title in the previous season, Sir Alex Ferguson led his team to a historical treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and the Champions League.
A lot of players became legends of the club that day and among those were Peter Schmeichel. However, the story could’ve quickly changed for Schmeichel who was close to leaving back the previous summer.
He revealed to BBC that he was close to leaving the team back because he felt they didn’t do well enough in European competitions. Little did he know, Manchester United would become the first English team to win the Treble next season.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson did it, Pep Guardiola has been the only manager who has won a treble with an English club. The Spanish manager could also end up winning his fourth PL title in a row this Sunday.
Unfortunately for Schmeichel, he never won another trophy for United after that Treble. the Dutch goalkeeper left Old Trafford the following season and decided to hang up his gloves in 2003.
Schmeichel came very close to making the worst decision of his career, he would’ve regretted it even more had he made it close to his last few years at the very top level of the game. Now, he is celebrated as a legend of the club.
