Fernandes: 8; Onana: 7; Mainoo: ?? | Manchester United player ratings in 3-2 victory over Newcastle United | Premier League 23/24

Manchester United took on Newcastle United tonight in what was their last game at Old Trafford this season. After a poor campaign, the Red Devils owed it to the fans to put on a performance in the last game of the season.

That’s exactly what they sought to do as they started the game off strong and took a 1-0 lead to begin with. Newcastle struck back within the opening minutes of the second half and levelled the game.

But Amad Diallo was once again Manchester United’s hero tonight and gave them the lead by scoring an absolute banger. Rasmus Hojlund extended the lead but Newcastle also took one back to make it 3-2 and that’s all she wrote.

Here are WAFU’s ratings of Manchester United players in the game against Newcastle United

Andre Onana: 7

Andre Onana wasn’t called upon often during the first half but he was calm and collected whenever a shot did find its way towards the goal, made a crucial save to save United during the second half. Nothing he could’ve done to stop Lewis Hall’s rocket. His distribution was also on point helping United get into threatening positions during the opening minutes of the game.

Diogo Dalot: 6/10

Diogo Dalot had almost no presence on offence tonight. However, he didn’t let his off-night on attack hold him back on the defensive end of things. An average performance for Diogo tonight.

Jonny Evans: 7/10

Jonny Evans was easily Manchester United’s best defender tonight, he held his line when others wouldn’t and was constantly filling in the gaps left behind by Casemiro who seemed all too happy to be running up to the middle. An excellent showing from the veteran tonight.

Casemiro: 7.5/10

Casemiro often ran up to the middle leaving holes in the defence at the beginning of the game. However, he slowly grew into the game and went on to make a wonderful tackle to deny Anthony Gordon a certain goal, he followed it up a few minutes later with a goal-line clearance. Made another crucial block on Gordon during the second half but then failed to track Gordon”s run leading to the equaliser.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7/10

Aaron Wan-Bissaka seemed to be on a mission tonight, the intensity with which he played and the urgency he showed when United lost possession is definitely worth mentioning. Made a crucial block to deny Anthony Gordon who was looking to play it into the United box.

Kobbie Mainoo: 7.5/10

Kobbie Mainoo had another terrific game, he scored the team’s first goal to give them the lead within 30 minutes. Also created an amazing opportunity for Amad Diallo who failed to double United’s lead. While he struggled to do a whole lot in the middle, his contributions in the final third speak for themselves.

Sofyan Ambrabat: 6/10

Sofyan Amrabat seems to be improving as his days at the club come to a close. The Morrocan was very calm in the middle tonight, always tracking back and playing the ball forward with precision. That was until his clumsiness caught up to him in the second half and he gave the ball away leading to an equaliser for Newcastle United. Made it up by stopping a 3 on 1 Newcastle attack which would’ve given them the lead.

Alejandro Garnacho: 4/10

Alejandro Garnacho missed a golden opportunity in the first half to put United up. His dribbling flair didn’t have a lot of effect tonight as Newcastle kept stripping the ball from the Argentine. A poor game for the young lad,

Scott McTominay: 5/10

It was another poor night for McTominay as he once again looked lost playing as an AM. However, to his credit, tonight was a fraction better than his last outing as an AM and he made a few threatening runs that weren’t awarded. He spent most of his time covering for Fernandes who was dropping deep to create something for United.

Amad Diallo: 8.5/10*

Diallo kept penetrating and getting into threatening positions, however, he often lacked the final touch. But, he was a constant threat and put a pass into Mainoo’s feet for the lead and then kept it going by hitting an absolute banger in the second half to put United up.

Bruno Fernandes: 8/10

What a first game back from injury it was for Bruno Fernandes. Manchester United who often looked lost on offence without him looked threatening whenever he got on the ball. He made a wonderful opportunity for Garnacho, but the young Argentine failed to convert. The Red Devils would have looked a lot poorer tonight if Fernandes wasn’t pulling the strings.

Substitutes:

Lisandro Martinez: N/A

Martinez finally made his return from injury tonight. However, he didn’t get enough playing time to warrant a rating.

Marcus Rashford: N/A

Made his 400th appearance for Manchester United. Unfortunately came on in the 82nd minute and didn’t get enough touches or time to do a lot.

Christian Eriksen: N/A

Did not warrant a rating.

Rasmus Hojlund: 7/10

Scored an amazing goal in just his first minute on the pitch. Made it 3-1 for Manchester United after coming on in the 82nd minute.
