Erik ten Hag asks sympathy for struggling Manchester United star Marcus Rashford
Speaking in the pre-match press conference as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Erik ten Hag has asked fans to cut some slack for struggling Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, asking them to back him amidst his extended slump.
Rashford has had one of his worst seasons in a Red Devils shirt since his promotion to the senior team. Coming on the back of one of his best scoring seasons last time around, his fortunes have directly correlated with that of the team.
The blue-eyed boy of Manchester is slowly yet surely losing the support of his fans. If the likes of Jadon Sancho or Antony had not performed for as long as Rashford has, there is no doubt that the fans would have turned against him by now.
Erik ten Hag has tried different things with Rashford to try and give him confidence. The Dutch coach has played him on the left, through the middle and also on the right on occasions this season, with the results being middling at best.
Speaking about the situation surrounding Rashford, Ten Hag has appealed to Man Utd fans to show some support to the struggling Englishman,
“I have a lot of sympathy for Rashy, of course..Last year, he had a brilliant season; I think the best in his career. I think it was 30 goals. We can see what he is capable of. This season, he hasn’t given the performances and people are very critical and I think we have to back him. Everyone should back him and should push him to get back to the levels he had last year.”
What does the future hold for Rashford?
The important question here is: How long can Rashford command a place in this team without performing? The truth to be told though is that there are not many other options who are covering themselves in glory either.
Born and bred in Manchester, Rashford will be hoping to turn it around at Old Trafford. We have seen in the past that the Englishman can be a clutch player for the team, scoring important goals and helping the team perform well.
It’s still not clear as to whether Ten Hag would remain Man Utd manager come the summer. Maybe a new coach is what Rashy needs to get back to his very best. He will be hoping to erase this season from his memory and start afresh.
