Jeff Stelling urges Brentford forward Ivan Toney to join Tottenham Hotspur over Manchester United
Jeff Stelling believes that Brentford star Ivan Toney should snub Manchester United and other big clubs to join Tottenham Hotspur. Stelling reasoned that Toney could be a readymade replacement for now-Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane at Spurs without any competition.
Since helping Brentford secure promotion to the Premier League and maintain their position there, Toney has experienced a steep rise in his reputation. The 28-year-old has continued his dominant and prolific form despite missing several games earlier this season due to a gambling suspension.
From May 2023 onwards, Toney served an eight-month suspension for breaching football betting rules for placing various bets. He placed bets on himself to score, his team to win and Brentford to lose when he didn’t play.
Toney had 21 goals and five assists last season from 35 appearances in all competitions before the ban commenced. The 28-year-old has returned to action with similar form despite Brentford’s struggle as a whole this season.
He has already scored four goals and provided an assist from 13 appearances in the Premier League this season. Toney contributes a lot to the overall gameplay of his team, linking up the midfield with the forward line.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Stelling advised Toney to snub Man United and join Spurs during the next transfer window. He said:
““My next thought is about Ivan Toney. We know, we know, I don’t need to be worried about being disrespectful because we know he is going to be on the move. We were talking about Spurs for Eberechi Eze, but Ivan Toney. No, I don’t see him as an Arsenal player, I don’t see him joining any of the top four as they are now. Manchester United, for sure, because Rasmus Hojlund, he is going to go on and be a good footballer, and I think we would all agree with that, but right now, you know, he is learning his trade. Toney is pretty much the finished article, but I think the obvious choice for Ivan Toney is Tottenham.”
Toney is a strong target man but also possesses the technical qualities on his feet to be a quality number nine. His ability to be a threat in both the aerial and ground action makes him a suitable frontman for United.
The Red Devils have struggled with consistency and balance this season in the defensive and offensive phases. They are currently seventh in the Premier League table and barely managed to make it to the FA Cup final.

United needs attacking reinforcement during the summer to ensure they don’t suffer a similar struggle this season. While their new signing Rasmus Hojlund has shown promising potential, he has been inconsistent and unable to contribute to the overall play. Furthermore, Marcus Rashford has failed to repeat his last season’s form, making him unreliable as a regular goal scorer.
