Manchester United will not trigger the buy clause in Sofyan Amrabat loan deal
Last summer’s transfer window brought a mix of excitement and anticipation to Old Trafford, with the loan signing of Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina generating particular interest among Manchester United fans. After a summer-long pursuit, United managed to secure the Moroccan midfielder’s services on deadline day, hoping he would provide much-needed competition for Casemiro at the base of the midfield.
Fast forward to the present, and it’s fair to say that Amrabat’s loan spell at United hasn’t quite gone to plan. With just 13 starts across all competitions, his impact has been minimal, to say the least. The recent FA Cup match against Liverpool, where he saw himself left out of the starting XI in the absence of Casemiro, speaks volumes about his standing in the squad.
According to Manchester Evening News, Man United decided not to trigger the buy clause for Sofyan Amrabat. Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Casemiro’s absence has exposed United’s lack of depth in the defensive midfield position.
What next for United?
The Brazilian’s pivotal role in the 2022/23 campaign was evident, and his absence left manager Erik ten Hag scrambling for alternatives. Kobbie Mainoo is showing promise as a box-to-box midfielder, but United still need a long-term solution to complement him and fill the void left by Casemiro.
Looking ahead to next season, United find themselves in need of not one but potentially two defensive midfield signings. While finding a replacement for Casemiro is paramount, securing a reliable backup who can provide cover and compete for a starting spot is equally crucial. Amrabat has evidently, not been it.
We have to sign a top-class player to back Case up for however long he is at the club, after which the player would take over as first-choice. Possibly, Joao Neves of Benfica who has been a long-standing target for the Red Devils.

As observers of United’s season, it’s certainly evident that the club’s recruitment strategy in midfield needs careful evaluation. Learning from the Amrabat situation, it surely becomes clear that signing players based solely on potential, without considering their adaptability to the team’s style and needs, can be a gamble.
