Manchester United are ready to battle several Italian clubs to secure Antonio Conte as a successor for Erik ten Hag
Amid interest from Italian clubs, Manchester United earmarks Antonio Conte as a successor to current manager Erik ten Hag. Conte is currently on a break after leaving Tottenham Hotspur in March 2023 before the beginning of the current season.
The 54-year-old has enjoyed a successful tenure in the Premier League while managing Chelsea from July 2016 to July 2018. He won the Premier League in the 2016-17 season and the FA Cup in the 2017-18 season for them.
Conte has managed Juventus and Inter Milan during his managerial career, enjoying great success at both clubs. He has won the Serie A four times in his managerial career with both Juventus and Inter. Under his regime Juventus won the 2011-12 season unbeaten, winning the title for the 28th time.
Conte managed Spurs during his last stint but failed to achieve any success there due to poor squad and culture. The former Italian player publicly criticized the club’s culture and philosophy, questioning their ambition and contentment with mediocrity.
Despite the incompatibility, Conte finished his tenure with Spurs with a 53.25-win percentage, winning 41 out of 77 matches. Fichajes reported that United alongside Napoli, AC Milan and Juventus want Conte as their next manager before the upcoming season.
United have suffered a horrible season under Ten Hag, exiting early from the Champions League and the Carabao Cup. They finished fourth in the Champions League group stages, accumulating several losses in all competitions, early in the season.
The Red Devils are currently seventh in the Premier League table, 10 points behind fifth-placed Spurs with six games remaining. They have lost 12 times in the Premier League and their goal difference is minus one.
The embarrassing goal difference proves the struggle that Ten Hag faced in building cohesiveness in the squad. They showed weakness in both the defensive and the offensive phases of the game, lacking passion and conviction as well.
