Chris Sutton expresses surprise at comments made by Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag

Former footballer and BBC Sport‘s football expert Chris Sutton has expressed a strong disagreement towards Erik ten Hag‘s convictions regarding his side’s recent performances.

The Man United manager has admitted to having enjoyed his side’s performances, believing they should have picked up more points than they did in their last three league games.

The Red Devils have picked up two points in their last three games against Brentford, Chelsea, and Liverpool, having led in all three of those games late into the second half only to concede the points owing to some self-destructive defending.

Sutton does not believe United have been playing well.

“I just cannot make head nor tail of United. Their manager, Erik ten Hag, keeps saying that their performances are good, that they are making progress and that they have an identity, but I am just not seeing any of that.”

Up next for United is an away game to Bournemouth on Saturday. The Cherries came out victorious 3-0 when the two sides last met at Old Trafford in December.

United got what they deserved

Sutton is not alone in wondering what Ten Hag is talking about. Sure, there may have been a few things that caught the Dutchman’s eye, but in general, most looking at United this season have failed to understand what they’re trying to do as a collective.

Ultimately, this will end up costing Ten Hag his job. Of course, not all things are in his control, like the injuries he has had to deal with and the new ownership change with regards to the club’s sporting operations.

Nevertheless, the odds are against him and his men. United at least need to make a good showing in the last eight weeks of the season, even if they end it trophyless and without Champions League qualification for next season.
