Liverpool star indicates the team lost to itself instead of Manchester United
Liverpool were in the driving seat for a majority of the 90 minutes they played against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Reds were constantly creating chances and letting it fly at Andre Onana.
However, for all their proficiency at penetrating behind Ten Hag’s defensive line, Liverpool didn’t have enough to score the winning goal. Let’s have a look at what Virgil van Dijk had to say about the outcome. (h/t The Guardian)
“It feels like the Cup game again. In the first half we were much better than we played back then, we created chances and we limited them”
The Liverpool skipper added that the team didn’t do enough to finish them off and that’s what lost them the two points. So Van Dijk gave absolutely zero credit to Manchester United for their stellar comeback.
Bruno Fernandes showed great awareness and technique when he intercepted Jarell Quansah’s pass and grabbed the equaliser from just a few feet inside Liverpool’s half. Kobbie Mainoo was even better and scored an absolute banger to give his team the lead.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was unlucky to give away a penalty, which Mo Salah converted to make it 2-2. Van Dijk says the result was self-inflicted which is true. However, the Liverpool skipper seems to have forgotten that football is about how many goals you score and not about how many chances you create.

The Red Devils did a stellar job to come back and deserved the one point. Liverpool should be happy that the game didn’t completely escape their grasp and they were able to equalise within the final minutes of the game.
