Erik ten Hag expressed his frustration as Manchester United dropped more points against Chelsea after a dramatic late 4-3 loss. Chelsea beat United in the Premier League clash on Thursday which leaves the Red Devils 11 points behind top four.

The London rivals started the game aggressively, scoring the first goal in the fourth minute of the game through Conor Gallagher. They won a soft penalty which Cole Palmer dispatched in the 19th minute to give them a 2-0 lead.

However, the Red Devils fought back bravely when Alejandro Garnacho scored a goal in the 34th minute of the game. Garnacho used the mistake from Moises Caicedo to punch Chelsea and take the scoreline to 2-1.

Bruno Fernandes equalized the scoreline 2-2 in the 39th minute, giving United a psychological boost by shutting the home fans. Garnacho added a crucial goal in the 67th minute to give United a 3-2 lead and finish a special comeback.

However, the Red Devils suffered from their recurring weakness, giving the opponent too many chances to make a comeback. Chelsea earned a penalty during the final stages of the game which Palmer dispatched once again. Furthermore, United opted to attack after the Chelsea equalizer, resulting in defensive gaps which cost them dearly.

Ten Hag expressed his concern (h/t BeIN Sports) about the number of dropped points in the critical stage this season. He said:

“This week we’ve dropped points in stoppage time. We’ve dropped five points and that’s very expensive because the points are getting more expensive because the games are running out. We know that and we have to catch up. We are many points behind, it will be difficult but we will keep fighting and our team has character. We have seen today (against Chelsea) they are resilient and we will be in the fight against Liverpool.”

Before Brentford’s game, United enjoyed a strong run of form that allowed them to close the distance with the top-four. The Red Devils have suffered with same issue throughout the season which makes them vulnerable in all phases.

Whenever Ten Hag deploys an offensive approach, they leave spaces and when he deploys a defensive approach, they lose the attacking threat. United faces Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday and Ten Hag’s tactics are up for speculation for that game. Fans would want him to take an offensive approach contrary to the one he used during their game at Anfield.
