Bruno Fernandes impressed despite Man United losing to Chelsea
Few Man United players would have returned from London receiving praises for their performance at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea last night but Bruno Fernandes was certainly one of them.
In what turned out to be a seven-goal thriller, the Red Devils went 2-0 down to the Blues inside the first 20 minutes before completing a comeback in the 67th minute. Their hard work amounted to nothing, however, as they conceded two late stoppage-time goals to lose the game 4-3.
United captain Bruno Fernandes was instrumental in leading his side’s comeback, as he scored the second goal to go with his 10 recovering and 3 key passes, as noted by FotMob, having played the full game. He also maintained a passing accuracy of 83% and made 10 recoveries.
United host Liverpool next on Sunday after the deflating end to proceedings last night, having played them at Old Trafford not too long ago for their FA Cup quarter-final tie, in which they came out victorious with a score line of 4-3.
A disappointing end despite a spirited performance
It is particularly infuriating to think about United not returning from Stamford Bridge with any points after such an enthralling performance.
But the two separate phases of the game in which United conceded their goals are also indicative of the issues that have plagued them this season. Underlying numbers tell us United have found it hard to stop conceding shots, while Chelsea could be much higher up the table if they could convert their chances more. Well, they did on Thursday, as United fulfilled their numbers by conceding a whopping 28 shots.
United’s 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup was itself a helter-skelter affair. Getting ready to host them on Sunday after ending on the wrong side of that scoreline will require quite an effort.
