Manchester United escape Brentford with a point
Manchester United were involved in an absolute thriller of a game as they came away from Gtech Community Stadium with a shared point owing to a 1-1 draw against Brentford.
The injury time had it all, as Mason Mount thought he came through with one of the best slaps and grabbed three points of the season, while Kristoffer Ajer had other plans to see off the game.
Thomas Frank feels his team were much better on the night, as in his post-match opinion, Brentford played better in their 1-1 draw on Saturday than in their 4-0 victory over them last season. They memorably thrashed the Manchester Reds in Erik ten Hag’s second game in charge of the club in August 2022, a humiliating defeat for the Dutchman.
The Red Devils were on the back foot almost all game at the weekend as well, conceding 31 shots but somehow ending with a point on the table.
The Thomas Frank Perspective
Thomas Frank speaking to Sky Sports acknowledged how the Bees had an upper hand and how footballing gods saved the fate he has employed in the game for years, He said (via. Manchester Evening News):
“We beat Man United 4-0 last season but I thought we performed better today. It was our best of the season. We faced Manchester United, they’ve been in-form and their front three [is great], at times Garnacho [is] unplayable, Rashford back to a good level and Hojlund.”
“There should have been only one winner in the game, that could only be us. Then you go 1-0 down in the 96th minute and you think football is brutal. I almost lost faith in the football god but he gave a bit back.
“What a performance. We completely dominated the game and there could only be one winner.
“We had the most shots ever in the Premier League. How we didn’t win is incredible. I am very, very happy with the performance. It was more or less the perfect performance.”
Erik ten Hag came away with one point from an away ground where majority of big clubs have struggled to find their feet. Brentford away is always going to be a tricky fixture and you’d agree to an extent with their manager in his assessment of the game.
This xG distribution reflects the numbers behind what Thomas Frank said.
