Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez joined Argentina camp despite injury
Manchester United fans were sweating on Lisandro Martinez’s fitness when he was called up to join the Argentina squad for the ongoing international break.
It has been an injury-laden season for the former Ajax star; he had to get himself under the knife just one month into the season, and as he was returning to the regular fold, Martinez suffered another injury, this time on his knee, in what was his only second start of 2024.
His absence has been felt by Erik ten Hag & Co., who will be hoping that Lisandro Martinez’s return at the business end of the season will help the squad get that final push for a top-four spot.
The 26-year-old flew to the United States of America and spent a few days training with the national team ahead of their 3-0 win over El Salvador in Philadelphia.
As the Argentine squad were swapping the USA’s east coast for the west coast for their friendly with Costa Rica, a decision was made for Lisandro Martinez to travel back to the UK. The Argentine officials are happy with Licha’s progress and how he trained with the squad during his short stay with them.
The report states:
“The defender completed a week of good training, most of them on par with the group, and will return to the city of Manchester, England, to continue with the last part of the recovery from an injury that he has been carrying since the beginning of February.”
Lo Celso speaks on Lisandro Martinez travelling with Argentina squad
Lisandro Martinez’s international team-mate Giovani Lo Celso was speaking with D Sports about the family culture nurtured by Lionel Scaloni and singled out the United star and how he wanted to be there for his international teammates despite the injury.
Speaking with D Sports, Lo Celso said:
“This group is beautiful, anyone who arrives establishes themselves very quickly. It is a family
and it shows, that is why ‘Licha’ Martínez came while he is recovering and that reflects what
the National Team is, we all want to be here.”
