Sir Jim Ratcliffe makes England manager Gareth Southgate his primary choice to replace current Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag
England manager Gareth Southgate is the No.1 choice for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to replace Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. Ratcliffe has already made drastic changes in the United’s management after taking control of the footballing operations at the club.
Meanwhile, Southgate has refused to discuss his future with England until the Euro 2024 ends in Germany during the summer. England appointed Southgate in 2016 and his biggest achievement is finishing as runner-up in UEFA Euro 2020, losing to Italy.
His peers and England players widely respect the 53-year-old for creating a positive and cohesive atmosphere as manager. He has earned credit for promoting numerous youth players from England, giving them opportunities to shine at the senior level.
However, Southgate has also faced criticism for his conservative approach to the game, rarely using an attacking approach. Furthermore, he has shown stern loyalty towards certain players who are out of form or past their peak years.
Despite their quality and performances at the club level, players like Trent Alexander-Arnold struggled to break into the first team. The favouritism from Southgate has stopped many players from establishing themselves in the England squad despite their consistent performances.
Daily Star reported that Ratcliffe is confident of securing Southgate as the new manager to replace Ten Hag this summer. The Red Devils would need to pay around £800,000 in compensation for Southgate to appoint him for the managerial role.
Current manager Ten Hag has suffered a horrible season with United, facing criticism for his tactics and philosophy. United appointed the Dutchman from Ajax where he earned big reputation for his attacking philosophy and adventurous style of play.
However, he rejected his philosophy to compensate for the players he possessed at the club, using various methods that failed. The Red Devils embarrassingly crashed out of the Champions League in the Group stages earlier this season.

They also lost a lot of ground in the Premier League, currently lying in the sixth position. Furthermore, they suffered early elimination from the Carabao Cup, a trophy that they won last season to end the trophy drought.
Southgate could usher the new era under Ratcliffe, inheriting many players that he is managing at international level. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and recently called up Kobbie Mainoo would benefit from the appointment.
