Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia unlikely to feature again this season
The injury woes surrounding Tyrell Malacia have cast a shadow over Manchester United’s defensive options, with manager Erik ten Hag expressing frustration and raising concerns about the club’s medical staff.
Malacia‘s troubles began during pre-season training in July, when a knee issue surfaced, necessitating surgery. Despite hopes for a January return, a setback led to a second round of surgery, further prolonging his absence from the pitch. Compounding United’s left-back dilemma is the absence of Luke Shaw, who also sees himself sidelined with an injury until May.
Sergio Reguilon joined the Red Devils on loan from Tottenham, but the assurance of the medical staff led to United terminate his loan deal prematurely, leaving United and Erik ten Hag specially, with egg on his face.
Tough times with injuries!
Speaking of his frustrations, here is what ETH had to say via Manchester Evening News:
“You can accept in a position that a player is not available but when two players are not available over the course of the season that is very frustrating. Because that is also very difficult to catch up as a team but we dealt with it in the best way. But, of course, it is a disadvantage.”
“I think it’s going to be difficult for him (Malacia) this season to be available. He will fight, he’s back on the pitch, but not in the team and the process had some setbacks for him and he’s still going forwards really slowly and the season is coming to an end.”
“In December, I had the talks internally with the medical and performance [staff]. They assured me they (Shaw and Malacia) will both be fit in January and so you will have two left full-backs.”
Despite Malacia’s efforts to recover and return to training, his progress has been slow, casting doubt on his ability to contribute significantly before the end of the season. While his determination to overcome the setback is commendable, the reality of the situation suggests that his availability for competitive fixtures remains uncertain.
The setback with Malacia, who has 39 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, underscores the challenges faced by United in managing player injuries and rehabilitation effectively. While injuries are an unavoidable aspect of professional football, the impact of prolonged absences on the team’s performance and results cannot be underestimated.
As United navigate the final stages of the season, the absence of key players like Malacia poses a significant challenge, requiring the team to adapt and adjust their strategies accordingly.

Looking ahead, United will need to navigate the remainder of the season without the services of Malacia, whose prolonged absence poses a significant challenge in the left-back position. As the team aims to regain momentum and push for that UCL spot, the manager and medical staff will need to work collaboratively to manage the squad’s fitness and minimise the risk of further setbacks.
