Manchester United star Mason Greenwood is a man in demand in Spain
The future of Mason Greenwood at Manchester United is up in the air. Sir Jim Ratcliffe appears willing to give him a fresh start at Old Trafford but the option to sell him is also very much on the table.
This has led to speculations of whether he will return to Spain on a permanent basis. Greenwood is currently playing in La Liga on-loan at Getafe where he is trying to find his feet away from all the unwanted attention of the English media.
In his 22 appearances in the Spanish top-division this season, the Englishman has secured five goals and five assists apiece. The ability to reinvent himself in Spain could help Greenwood salvage his football career.
Greenwood receives Tebas’s support
His antics at Getafe complemented by his popularity meant that La Liga’s president Javier Tebas wants the 22-year-old to stay in Spain. The La Liga honcho insists that he isn’t concerned by the player’s past and would want him to have a long career in the Iberian top flight.
Speaking at the Financial Times business of football summit, La Liga’s president Javier Tebas said via The Guardian:
“I’m a lawyer. For someone that has come out of a legal case innocent, there’s nothing to say. I think it’s good because he’s another great player. Maybe the circumstances have made it easier for him to come, but he’s a great player and I have got no other comments to make.
“He’s doing really well at Getafe as a player and I hope he continues to be successful and continues to stay in Spanish football, because that’s always good for us. When someone isn’t condemned, what should we have done? This is what courts exist for. It is not up to me to know his case in detail. He is just another player.”
In many ways Tebas has indicated that since Greenwood has not been legally declared guilty, what else could Getafe have done. However, they are not the only Spanish top flight side in the fray for his signature.
Greenwood was also subject to interest from Barcelona earlier this week. His performances have reminded clubs of how good he can be on his day. Still just 22, Greenwood has the best years of his career ahead of him and could be worth a punt should the situation prove right. Which route United will eventually decide to take remains to be seen.
