Erik ten Hag reflects on recent positives and trust in youngsters following Luton Town win after turning a corner at United

It was a very narrow win at Kenilworth Road for Manchester United against Luton Town thanks to a brace by an in-form and now Premier League record holder Rasmus Højlund.

The three points yesterday mean the Reds from Manchester are on a four-match unbeaten run which puts them back into contention for the traditional top-four finish (i.e. Champions League qualification).

The recent success that United have enjoyed has multiple positives to it complemented by the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo at the heart of midfield, and of course, Rasmus Højlund hitting his top gear after a challenging start that he faced at the start of his time at United where he went goalless in his first 14 league games.

The mood at the Red side of Manchester has seemingly lifted following the completion of the acquisition of 25% of the club by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Erik ten Hag was quizzed about whether United have turned a corner in the post-game press conference yesterday where he spoke about the togetherness of the squad and players being available again, as quoted by the Guardian:

“I think it’s too quick to say we have turned a corner. We are not there yet, we are still not in a position to say so. We are back in the race, but not in the position we want to be at this club – that is a minimum of the top four, so we have to catch up and we are still doing that. But I do think that now we are going in the right direction.”

“I was always convinced we would once the players were available. With this squad I knew – that with me and my coaching staff and players, and the togetherness, we have the quality to play for the top four. Of course over the season we had to prove it – but I was always convinced we would.”

Ten Hag has put his faith in United’s youngsters Mainoo, Højlund and Alejandro Garnacho and that has reaped massive dividends for United showing despite the challenges of today the future looks bright.

“It is about trust – the manager trusts the staff with their eye on the potential of the player so that did not surprise us. But of course they have to prove it – that’s the other thing, and something that goes with everyone in top sport – you have to prove it”

We might be on a run right now but anyone who watched the game would acknowledge the fact that United were lucky to get the three points against Villa last week and against Luton now. The performances need to improve and let’s hope Erik ten Hag can do just that.
