According to The Daily Mail (h/t Metro), Manchester United have been joined by Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur in their pursuit of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

The 21-year-old has generated interest from clubs like Real Madrid and Chelsea; however, the Red Devils and the Lilywhites are currently the only clubs that seem to have a genuine interest in signing the English defender.

Erik ten Hag has been trying to bolster his defensive line for a really long time. The situation is so bad that Everton, who are in the relegation zone, have conceded fewer goals this season than United, who are in the top six in the Premier League.

Jarrad Branthwaite deserves a lot of credit for Everton’s stellar defence. At 1.95m, he easily towers over most players in the Premier League. Moreover, the 21-year-old is fast and strong, which are excellent qualities to have in a defender.

The Dutchman wants to sign him in hopes of giving some much-needed rest to Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine is an amazing defender, but his body hasn’t been keeping up with him, as he recently picked up his second injury this season.

Over at Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou seems adamant about building a young and strong core. After signing Radu Dragusin for £26.7m, the Greek-Australian coach now has his eyes set on Branthwaite.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham will have an easier time signing Jarrad Branthwaite if the Toffees are relegated at the end of the season.

However, there are still 14 games remaining and a lot could change by the time summer arrives.
