Former Manchester United CEO David Gill praises the appointment of Omar Berrada as the new CEO of the club
Former Manchester United CEO David Gill has hailed the appointment of Omar Berrada as the new CEO of the club. United poached Berrada from their local rivals Manchester City after Sir Jim Ratcliffe successfully purchased 25% stakes at the club.
INEOS and Ratcliffe have control over footballing operations and the final say in the appointment of important roles at United. Berrada will replace Richard Arnold, who departed from the Red Devils’ CEO role in December, last year.
INEOS sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford is conducting an adult of the club which may see many changes in hierarchy. The Glazers remain the majority owner of United, but Ratcliffe has the power to make changes as he sees fit.
Speaking to the YouTube show FIVE (h/t Manchester Evening News), Gill praised the appointment of Berrada, highlighting his past success. He said:
“Firstly, I think appointing someone [Berrada] from outside is a good idea, someone with new ideas and a new perspective coming from a very successful club,”
Many fans and pundits praised the appointment of Berrada as a coup and considered him a game-changer for United. The Red Devils have struggled in football operations, unable to match their commercial success with success on the pitch.
United dwarfs over clubs in net spending in the player’s transfer market but many of those signings failed miserably. The fanbase believes that Berrada can change that, given the success Man City enjoyed under his supervision.
Berrada believes in balancing commercial success with success on the pitch, citing both sides as equally important. The Citizens have dominated the domestic competition in the past half a decade and achieved a famous treble last season.
