Boost for Manchester United and Barcelona as defensive transfer target open to leaving Bundesliga club

Man United and Barca gain transfer boost as defensive star is now ready to leave Bundesliga club

According to Spanish publication Fichajes, Manchester United and Barcelona are among the clubs that Matthijs de Ligt would be open to for a move. Amongst a list of prominent teams, offers from the Red Devils and the Catalan club are of more importance to the player.

It seems like Paris Saint-Germain were also interested in the player, but the Dutch defender is not interested in playing for the Ligue One side. Moreover, Manchester United will probably take precedence over Barcelona if both clubs make offers.

The reasoning is simple. As bad as Manchester United might be doing, they’re still in a better financial position than Barcelona who are under a ton of debt, and will probably not be able to afford a deal for De Ligt.

Moreover, Xavi Hernandez has already announced that he will be leaving the Catalan club at the end of the season. The Red Devils seem to be in better shape than Barcelona. Let’s not forget that we have a Dutch manager at the helm, who has coached the defender back at Ajax.

Moreover, the team will have space for a new centre-back as Raphael Varane has been a pale shadow of his former self. The Dutch defender will be a big upgrade over the ageing French star.

If Manchester United end the season on a bad note, De Ligt could be disheartened with his decision to be open to the club. If Erik ten Hag wants to attract new players during the summer, he will have to do a better job during the second half of the season.
