Ally McCoist give his thoughts on why Manchester United haven’t extended Raphael Varane yet
Former Sunderland AFC man Ally McCoist has chimed in on the argument behind why Manchester United haven’t extended Raphael Varane’s contract yet. The team has opted against extending the Frenchman this January.
The 30-year-old after being rejected for an extension will now be out of contract at the end of the summer. While there has been some talk about Manchester United working on a new contract for the Frenchman, nothing has been formalized yet.
The Red Devils were planning on retaining the services of Varane by extending him on lower wages. However, the amount of time that the club has been taking to put a deal forward, indicates that they might be ready to let go of the player.
Here’s what McCoist had to say about the Manchester United defender while talking to talkSPORT. (h\t Manchester Evening News)
“One of the reasons why they haven’t chosen to extend Varane’s contract will be his lack of game time, as well as his fitness levels and wages.”
It seems like McCoist has hit the nail on its head with these three reasons. Varane hasn’t been a regular feature due to his fitness issues and his wages are indeed exorbitantly high.
It is now becoming more and more likely that the team is preparing to let go of the player. The Frenchman is already free to negotiate with other teams, and Manchester United will likely have no qualms about him doing so.
