Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag defends Antony while citing his off-field issues as the biggest factor for his struggles
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag supported Antony amid “off-field issues” that stopped him from playing at his best. Antony has faced scrutiny for poor performances and lack of contribution since joining the club in the summer of 2022.
United lost 14 games from 29 matches in all competitions so far, failing to score in nine of those games. Poor performances have riddled their attacking department, contributing to a lack of goals and assists.
Antony faced scrutiny for his poor contribution in front of goals and overall impact on the United’s gameplay. The Brazilian has been theatrical and flashy on the ball but most of his trickery leads to nothing.
The 23-year-old has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season but failed to produce a goal or an assist. Antony took a leave of absence in the middle of the season to address legal allegations made against him.
Speaking to reporters (h/t The Guardian), Ten Hag defended Antony and blamed the off-field issues for hindering Antony’s form. He said:
“I think it’s very simple. His off-field issues stop him playing [well]. First year was OK, the pre-season [of this term] was very OK, first four games was very good. I’ve seen the game against Spurs back [a 2-0 loss in August] and he played a very good game but from the moment he was out and then he came back and didn’t deliver the performance you should expect from him and he can do so much better.”
United signed Antony from Ajax during the summer of 2022 right after Ten Hag’s appointment as the manager. The Brazilian has only managed to contribute eight goals and three assists in all competitions from 65 matches.
Antony cost the Red Devils £86m but failed to live up to the price tag, enduring the ire of critics. Ten Hag has signed many players who have worked with him in the past during his previous jobs.

Patience is already running thin at the club due to the poor season and the Brazil international is running out of time. We think United would look to replace the winger in upcoming transfer windows if his goal drought continues.
