Manchester United received a major injury boost as Mason Mount returned to light training after a calf injury
The return of midfielder Mason Mount to training signals a major injury boost for Manchester United. The 24-year-old sustained a calf injury against Luton Town right before the November international break, sidelining him ever since.
For the second time this season, injury has compelled Mount to miss numerous games. The England international suffered a hamstring injury during the 2-0 away loss to Tottenham Hotspur in August.
The injuries have hampered Mount’s first season with United but the 24-year-old struggled with performance when he played. His struggle coincided with the struggles of United this season as they have lost 13 games in all competitions.
United’s premature exits from the Carabao Cup and the Champions League highlight vulnerabilities across the entire pitch. The Red Devils have continuously leaked goals and failed to create and score many chances, showing inconsistencies and poor cohesiveness.
Manchester Evening News reported that Mount has resumed light individual training on the grass at Carrington on Wednesday morning. The 24-year-old is still a few weeks away from joining the main group and being available for selection.
United signed Mount from Chelsea during the summer transfer window as manager Erik ten Hag prioritized an energetic midfield playmaker. Despite being in the last season of his contract at Chelsea, Mount cost an initial £55m to the Red Devils.
The Englishman came to Old Trafford with high expectations after showing his attacking talent for the London club. However, Mount has failed to live up to the expectations, making 12 appearances in all competitions.
The 24-year-old has only one assist to his name and managed to complete 90 minutes in just one game. Ten Hag deployed Mount as a deep lying playmaker to utilize his energy and work ethic in helping the defence.

The Englishman has failed to make an impact in that position, losing his place to Scott McTominay before the injury. Mount returns with an opportunity to prove his worth and live up to the expectations that come with the club. The 24-year-old wears the legendary number seven jersey at the club and needs to show he deserves to wear it.
