Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag faces a transfer decision as Sergio Reguilon could leave the club in January window
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag faces a transfer dilemma as the “break clause” clouds the future of Sergio Reguilon. United signed Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan deal during the summer transfer deadline day.
However, the deal involves the “break clause” that the Spurs can activate to bring the Spaniard back to London. Reguilon has featured a lot for the senior team under Ten Hag as the left-back department faced an injury crisis.
United lost Luke Shaw early in the season which kept him out until the end of the November international break. On the other hand, Tyrell Malacia missed the pre-season due to his injury with an estimated return in early 2024.
Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof and Sofyan Amrabat have featured as make-shift left-back in the absence of Reguilon. The left-back crisis has played a big role in United’s tactical imbalance, adding to their struggles this season.
Reguilon has featured as the left-back despite the return of Shaw as the England international has featured as a centre-back. The 26-year-old has featured in 10 matches for the Red Devils in all competitions, only missing the game due to a hamstring injury.
Speaking to the reporters (h/t Mirror), Ten Hag confirmed that the Red Devils must decide Reguilon’s future at the club. He said:
“We have to make a final decision on Reguilon. But also there is Spurs who are involved in that conversation as well.”
Ten Hag cannot afford to lose the players he has relied upon amid United’s struggle with consistency. The Red Devils have lost 11 games in all competitions with vulnerability in defence playing a key role.
United have conceded 38 goals from 23 matches in all competitions, failing to keep their defence organized and cohesive. Reguilon has not stood out as a performer but he puts in hard-working shifts even if the team’s morale depletes.

Ten Hag needs to ensure the security of the left-back department for the latter half of the season. While Spurs are grappling with their own injury crisis, they have their left-back position secured with Destiny Udogie. Reguilon’s future at United remains uncertain even though the Red Devils need his services more than the Spurs.
