Man United need another defensive midfielder in the upcoming transfer window

Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News) reports that Manchester United is looking to sign a new defensive midfielder in the upcoming winter transfer window with the futures of Amrabat and Casemiro in question.

Concerns have arisen regarding Sofyan Amrabat‘s performance since his summer arrival at Manchester United. The 27-year-old Moroccan seems yet to reach his full potential. In response, the club is actively searching for additional players to strengthen the team for the remainder of the 2023–24 season.

Unless Amrabat enhances his performance and becomes Erik ten Hag’s preferred starter, it’s unlikely that United will make his move permanent. Internal discussions about potential targets are underway, with the recruitment team focusing on finding players who align with the team’s style of play.

With Casemiro sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained in last month’s League Cup defeat to Newcastle United, United’s options in defensive midfield are limited. However, Kobbie Mainoo’s return from injury could further reduce Amrabat’s role.

United fans have long recognized Kobbie Mainoo’s talent, and any initial concerns about his debut have been dispelled. Mainoo’s composure has been a boon, and he seems poised to address the team’s midfield challenges. His continued strong performances are eagerly anticipated.

On the other hand, Casemiro, who transferred from Real Madrid, quickly became an indispensable player for Erik ten Hag in his debut season. However, as his prime years wane and injuries occur, the demands of the fast-paced Premier League are taking a toll.

With Casemiro out and a limited midfield roster, the need for a defensively-minded midfielder is becoming increasingly apparent. Amrabat has yet to meet expectations, and if his current level of play persists, United may reconsider making his signing permanent.
