Alejandro Garnacho named Kobbie Mainoo as his Man of the Match
After the emphatic 3-0 win against Everton over the weekend, Manchester United are now only six points off the top of the table and our youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho had excellent performances in this fixture.
Alejandro Garnacho commented on Kobbie Mainoo’s Instagram post that the debutant was his man of the match.
It was Kobbie Mainoo’s competitive debut for the club and it was surely a great one for both the fans and the player. Complications were bound to rise as Erik ten Hag faced a one-game suspension, depriving his side of his valuable touchline observations and constant calls for adjustments.
Before suffering an ankle injury against Real Madrid, the 18-year-old made a strong impression early in the preseason tour and was one of Ten Hag’s top youngsters. He finally made his starting XI debut.
With club captain Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay along with him in midfield, the responsibility of dropping deep and collecting the ball from the centre-backs fell on the young star’s shoulders. Mainoo assumed a crucial role in his team’s offensive strategy and performed commendably throughout his 71 minutes on the pitch before being replaced by Sofyan Amrabat.
Throughout the history of the Premier League, there have been only two instances where an overhead kick was deemed the goal of the season. One was Emre Can’s incredible strike for Liverpool against Watford in the 2016-17 season, and the other was Wayne Rooney’s memorable match-winner in a Manchester derby during the 2011-12 season. Naturally, Garnacho’s goal is now being compared to these remarkable moments.
It’s great that both our youngsters are getting enough playing time to showcase their talents, thereby helping them gain more exposure in the Premier League.
