Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov wants former teammate Anthony Martial to have a future at the club.

Former Manchester United icon Dimitar Berbatov shared his hope for former teammate Anthony Martial to redeem his United career. During the course of the current season so far, the team has utilized Martial as a backup for the attackers.

The 27-year-old has failed to impress the current manager Erik ten Hag since the Dutchman took over the club. Last season, Martial suffered numerous injuries that kept him sidelined for numerous games and he struggled in consistently delivering performances.

The Red Devils’ attack department has struggled to score goals in the Premier League this season. Only Marcus Rashford has scored just one goal out of all the attackers they possess in their ranks.

Speaking to Betfair (h/t Dazn), Berbatov revealed his hope for Martial to redeem his United career under Ten Hag. He said:

“I really hope Martial has a future at Man United. I’m a bit biased because I used to play with him, and I saw the quality he has. He needs to be shaken up a little bit, and there are moments where he needs to push hard and change his game. I saw in the last couple of games, he did that, he pressed, he was angry in his body language and going hard towards the opposition.”

United signed Martial during his teenage year from the French club AS Monaco in the summer of 2015. The France international’s high price tag triggered a lot of debate among the fans and football pundits.

The 27-year-old has made 313 appearances for the Red Devils, contributing with 89 goals and 54 assists. Ex-United players like Andy Cole and Gary Neville criticized the lack of contribution from Martial over the years.

The inconsistent performances and struggle with injury played a massive role in the Frenchman’s struggle. Nonetheless, the poor output of goals is simply unacceptable for a forward playing at a top club like United.

It is understandable that Berbatov wants his former teammate to redeem his United career. The United icon played 25 matches together with Martial during their time together at the French club Monaco.

As Martial is no longer a teenager, United cannot afford to provide him with additional chances beyond those he has already received. The 27-year-old’s exit seems inevitable as he is playing in the last season of his contract at the club.
