Everton star Amadou Onana provided an update on his future amid ongoing links to Manchester United and various top clubs.
Everton midfielder Amadou Onana shared an update on his future amid continuous links to Manchester United and several elite clubs. The 22-year-old has been a pivotal first-team player for the Merseyside club as they fight to avoid a relegation battle.
The Belgium international is a versatile midfielder who utilises his imposing stature to assert dominance on the pitch. Standing at 1.95 meters, Onana has a commanding presence, both on the ground and aerially, winning most headers in duels. The 22-year-old has other physical attributes like speed, power and athleticism, allowing him to cover close spaces.
The 22-year-old plays essentially as a defensive midfielder due to his ability to disrupt the opponent’s momentum with his tackling ability. The Belgian reads the game well and uses his physical attributes to intercept passes and regain possession.
However, while excelling in aerial and ground duels, Onana has shown sub-par capabilities in possession. The 22-year-old lacks finesse in his passing, neither displaying progressive nor high-volume passes.
The Belgium international requires a considerable amount of improvement in this area to play in a possession-based team. He has shown the desire and eagerness to contribute in the attacking third with his forward runs.
Onana, in conversation with Transfermarkt (h/t football.london), emphasized his boundless ambitions and asserted an infinite potential of his abilities. He said:
“I am truly convinced that there are no upper limits for me. That doesn’t mean to sound arrogant, but I believe in my abilities and that I can come to a top club and become a regular player there. Clubs came knocking, but I wanted to stay to develop further and become a top player at Everton, perhaps the best.”
An injury has sidelined United’s primary defensive midfielder, Casemiro. The Brazilian international has struggled with form this season despite being in good goalscoring form, his overall contribution is lacking.
Furthermore, new midfield signings like Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount have failed to make an impact so far this season.

United have conceded 30 goals from 18 matches in all competitions and deep midfield has been an area of concern. Opponents have exploited the pockets of spaces between midfield and defence which a defensive midfielder is responsible to cover.
United can get serious for Onana as his physicality and defensive prowess will add something different to the United squad. The future holds immense promise for Onana with room for development in his passing game and offensive contributions.
