Manchester United ace Harry Maguire reveals why he opted to stay put at Old Trafford
Manchester United star Harry Maguire never quite met expectations at Old Trafford but he was never as bad as his naysayers claimed him to be. Lacking in confidence and morale, he enjoyed a poor 2022-23 campaign and fell down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.
In the summer of 2023, Maguire was stripped of the club captaincy and was heavily linked with an exit from the Theatre of Dreams. A move to West Ham United appeared imminent only for the player to eventually stay put.
He has had to fight his way back into contention but the decision to prove himself has been vindicated so far. Maguire has impressed of late and has aided the club to put on a running run in the absence of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
According to the Metro, Maguire shows a rather humble understanding of his situation at Manchester United. Despite being one of the biggest transfers in the club’s history, his position in the first XI is far from a given and the English international accepts it.
“I always thought my form was there but I was up against some top, top centre-backs and last year they were playing amazing, so I just didn’t get as many opportunities as I would have liked.”
Competition is certainly a thing at a club such as Manchester United and given the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, there is an abundance of quality on the centre-back roster. The fact that Maguire understands it and is on board is good news for the Red Devils.
“But this club demands competition for places and that’s what we’ve got in that position.”
Maguire is an exceptional player who can be a solid defender in the right system. Having him don the role of a ball-playing centre-back was bound to see him fail as it played to the weaker side of his game.
The 30-year-old is excellent in the air and can be a colossus at the back if Ten Hag can coax the best out of him. With morale skyrocketing, there is no better time than now for Maguire to retake his spot in the first XI as a regular.
