Manchester United legend David De Gea takes a sarcastic dig at the critics of Bruno Fernandes after the Fulham victory.
Manchester United legend David De Gea responded to an Instagram post from Bruno Fernandes with a mimicking taunt towards critics. Many experts and ex-United players criticized Fernandes’ capability to captain the senior team after the Manchester derby loss last Sunday.
United lost back-to-back games at Old Trafford with a humiliating 0-3 scoreline against Manchester City and then Newcastle United. The Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup after their loss against the Magpies, ending their title defence.
United manager Erik ten Hag appointed Fernandes as the senior team captain during the summer before the current season commenced. The 29-year-old is the main outlet for creativity in the team and he has produced consistent performances since joining United.
Former United captain Roy Keane criticized Fernandes’ on-pitch behaviour and antics, and he requested his removal from the team. Nevertheless, the Portugal international delivered a fantastic performance against Fulham in the Premier League match at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
Fernandes scored the late winner to secure the important three points against the Greater London club, silencing his doubters. The Portuguese playmaker has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season while contributing with two goals and three assists.
The United captain celebrated the victory with an Instagram post (h/t Mirror) where De Gea mimicked his critics for fun. The legendary goalkeeper wrote “You are not the right captain” with a zipped mouth emoji, taunting Fernandes’ detractors.
De Gea captained United a few times during his 12-year stint and played alongside Fernandes until his departure in the summer.

Fernandes has a knack for showing his emotions on the pitch and the antics backfire at times. The Portuguese international has a lot of inspirational qualities and demands better performances from his teammates. However, the 29-year-old does not possess the level-headedness required when the team needs to maintain composure and unity in the face of adversity.
We think United cannot afford to sack Fernandes mid-season as Ten Hag cannot afford any more drop in morale. The Red Devils have bigger issues that need more attention, starting with the team cohesiveness and balance.
