Manchester United legend Gary Neville tore into Anthony Martial and his significantly poor output for the club.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville chastised Anthony Martial while emphasising that his criticism has not been harsh enough. Martial is struggling badly with form this season as his lucrative contract expires at the end of the season.
United have suffered back-to-back losses and crashed out of the Carabao Cup after a 3-0 loss against Newcastle United. The Red Devils suffered a humiliating loss in the Manchester derby 3-0 as Manchester City dominated the game on Sunday.
Newcastle humbled United manager Erik ten Hag’s team, the defending champions in the Carabao Cup. Both of their back-to-back losses came in the home game at Old Trafford as the dejected crowd booed their own.
Martial only featured for four minutes against the Citizens but started the Carabao Cup game against the Magpies. He had shown a lackluster performance throughout the game until the 64th-minute substitution for Rasmus Hojlund.
Neville informed Sky Sports that Martial fails to deliver the expected level of productivity for a United forward. He said:
“When you hear that stat that a guy has been at the club nine years – a goalscorer that cost £50m, £60m, £70m – has scored basically 89 goals in nine years and we still can’t get him out the club, I don’t think we are being too harsh. I don’t think we’re being harsh enough!.”
United signed Martial from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco during the summer of 2015 for £36m. The fee increased to £58m through the agreed addons between the two clubs. The transfer broke the record for highest transfer fee paid by a club for a teenager during that time.
Martial has appeared in 311 games for the Red Devils while contributing 89 goals and 54 assists in all competitions. He is currently in his ninth season at the club, a period marked by injuries and inconsistent performances.
The France international has appeared in 13 matches this season in all competitions, only providing a goal and an assist.

Martial had immense potential which remains unfulfilled and the same has happened with many big talents in the past decade. The Red Devils are facing a plethora of problems that stall the development while the 27-year-old should take accountability too.
