Football pundit Chris Sutton voices his concern over the career of Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount
Chris Sutton believes that Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has “fallen into a black hole” since signing for the club. During the Manchester derby, the England international found himself on the bench, and he struggled in the Carabao Cup loss against Newcastle United.
United are having a nightmare season with eight losses out of 15 games in all competitions so far. The Red Devils registered back-to-back 3-0 losses at Old Trafford against Manchester City and Newcastle.
Fans and experts were expecting Mount to start against Man City in the Manchester derby on Sunday. United manager Erik ten Hag made a surprise decision when he benched his priority midfield signing of the summer.
The 24-year-old came on as a half-time substitute for Sofyan Amrabat when the scoreline was 0-1 in City’s favour. The Citizens dominated the second half and scored two goals to eliminate any chance of a comeback from the hosts. Mount failed to make any significant impact during the second half as his poor form for the club continued.
Sutton told the Daily Mail that Mount’s career at Old Trafford is in immediate danger as he fails to impress. He said:
“Mason Mount has ‘fallen into a black hole’ since his £60m move to Manchester United and his career is in danger of petering out at Old Trafford.”
United signed Mount from Chelsea during the summer transfer window as the Englishman fits Ten Hag’s profile for a midfielder. The 24-year-old showed creativity and productive output during his time in London and possesses immense energy to cover the distance.
The England international has appeared in only nine matches for United in all competitions while contributing with just one assist. Ten Hag deployed Mount in a deeper role contrary to the attacking roles he used to play for Chelsea.

Mount unfortunately suffered an unknown injury that hampered his debut season with the Manchester giants. However, the Englishman has only completed the full 90 minutes in just one game, in the recent Carabao Cup loss. Sutton’s worry might seem too soon for some but holds a lot of weight given the struggle of Mount. We hope that the Englishman can turn things around and simultaneously help in the course correction for United’s season.
