Former England defender Matt Upson left impressed with Manchester United star Marcus Rashford.
Former England defender Matt Upson lauded the incredible goal from Marcus Rashford that gave England the lead against Italy. The English side defeated the Italians 3-1 at Wembley Stadium in the Euro qualification game on Tuesday.
England has qualified for the EURO 2024 competition with the win as they currently lead Group C after six matches. Gareth Southgate’s men dominated the group stages with five wins and one draw with Rashford playing a pivotal role.
The 25-year-old will return to United as Premier League action returns on the weekend. The Red Devils will travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United on Saturday.
Upson spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live (h/t BBC) about Rashford’s incredible solo goal against Italy to break the deadlock. He said:
“The breakaway goal from Rashford was top class and from thereon in it only looked like England’s game. A good performance, especially in the second half.”
United have struggled with form this season as they have lost six games in 11 matches in all competitions. The Red Devils are 10th in the Premier League table while they’ve lost both the Champions League Group A games.
Rashford’s form has come under severe criticism as he has failed to continue the form, he had last season. The 25-year-old was the leading goal scorer for United last season after years of struggle with inconsistency.
The England international has faced similar inconsistencies this season while contributing a goal and three assists in 10 games. Fans and football experts accused the Englishman of his selfish and one-dimensional style of play.

Rashford has a tendency to depend more on cutting inside and shooting which makes me predictable at times. The 25-year-old has incredible pace, close control, and dribbling ability to beat the players and score. However, we think Rashford can contribute more if he adds to his style by being more unpredictable. He can go down the byline to assist his teammates at times to catch the opponent off-guard.
