Fabrizio Romano lists Antonio Silva, Todibo, or Tapsoba as top defensive priorities at Manchester United for 2024
Fabrizio Romano confirmed on the Daily Podcast (h/t Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing) that Manchester United are planning a defensive signing in the summer of 2024 with Antonio Silva, Jean-Clair Todibo, and Edmond Tapsoba all on the wishlist.
The journalist said that the major signing will happen in 2024 but during which the transfer window is up for speculation.
Romano spoke in detail about the Red Devil’s priorities for 2024 as Porto defender Silva stands out amongst the trio. He said:
“Next for United will likely be a center-back, that’s one of their priorities for 2024. Jean-Clair Todibo and Edmond Tapsoba are players they like, but in my opinion, Benfica’s Antonio Silva would probably be the stand-out option. I really love him as a player, the perfect opportunity for any club looking for a talented CB as was the case with Josko Gvardiol last year – it’s exactly the same kind of opportunity. It’s not a bargain as such, but it could be a smart investment for a top talent.”
The Benfica defender has gained interest from many top European clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Atlético Madrid. Silva has appeared in 52 games for Benfica while scoring five goals for the Portuguese club in all competitions.
The 19-year-old centre-back earned recognition for his high tackling accuracy and no-nonsense defending with incredible passing ability. The Portuguese international is already physically well-built and dominant despite his young age.
Silva boasts four tackles and clearances per game with a passing rate of 94% after featuring in six games in the Liga Portugal.
Todibo and Tapsoba offer far more experience compared to Silva. Tapsoba has featured in 145 games in all competitions while contributing six goals and two assists for Bayer Leverkusen. The 24-year-old is the primary choice centre-back for the German club.
Todibo plays for French club OGC Nice and received his international debut in a 2-1 defeat to Germany in September. The 23-year-old has featured in 109 games for Nice while scoring two goals and providing one assist in all competitions.

We believe the English giant should prioritise securing their signing soon. Addressing dire squad needs and finding a long-term successor to Raphael Varane is crucial. The three top targets are definitely a smart investment as Romano has stated and they will not come cheap.
