Brighton & Hove Albion are trying to beat Manchester United for Athletic Club forward Nico Williams
According to Fichajes (h/t Manchester Evening News), Brighton and Hove Albion are trying to beat Manchester United for Nico Williams.
Williams has been with La Liga side Athletic Club since he was around 11 years old and rose through the Bilbao ranks. The 21-year-old’s contract will end on June 30, 2024, which will make him a free agent next summer.
Clubs like Spanish giants Barcelona and Liverpool have also shown interest in the rise of the Spanish international.
Williams gained a reputation for his incredible pace and ability to progress with the ball. The young forward ball progression does not equate with his ball retention as that is one aspect he needs to improve.
The Bilbao Academy product is very good in the short link-up and physically well-built to play at the top level. Williams will be able to show his technical proficiency better once he becomes more level-headed and composed in decisive areas.
The Spaniard has a lot of untapped potential at just 21 years of age with a decent amount of first-team experience. Williams is very versatile and capable of playing in either flank as a wide midfielder or a wide forward.
The 21-year-old has appeared in 89 matches for Athletic so far in all competitions, contributing 12 goals and 11 assists.
The Red Devils are currently short on wide attacking options after Jadon Sancho had a fallout with the United manager Erik ten Hag. Antony has recently resumed training after receiving a leave of absence.
The Brazilian has failed to live up to his massive price tag since signing for United in the 2022 summer. Nevertheless, the Manchester club is short on depth in the wide forward department and needs quality reinforcements.

Brighton remains a tempting club for the 21-year-old because of their style of play and the incentive of regular football. Getting Williams for free would be a masterstroke for United, considering that he will likely attract interest from many big clubs. The Spaniard has all the potential to be a world-class player and United fans will enthusiastically observe this development.
