Dimitar Berbatov urges Manchester United to “wake up” after poor start to season

Former Manchester United hero Dimitar Berbatov has urged the Old Trafford side to “wake up” after their poor start to the season.

The Red Devils opened their 2023/24 term against Wolverhampton Wanderers at home. While we ended up getting a 1-0 victory, the performance from us was underwhelming.

Subsequently, the Old Trafford side travelled to North London to take on Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs put on a show for their fans at their stadium as they put in an inspiring second-half display and beat us 2-0.

Speaking to Betfair (h/t Manchester Evening News), Berbatov, who has played for both Tottenham and United, feels it is still early in the season but wants to see more from the Red Devils.

“It’s just one game, of course, Spurs need to build on that, and United need to f*****g wake up as soon as possible.”

In the previous campaign, the Old Trafford side started off slow as well. Erik ten Hag lost his first two games in charge of the Manchester-based club to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

As a result, United had to play catch-up for the rest of the 2022/23 term. However, in the end, the Dutch manager managed to get us the Carabao Cup and we finished third in the league table.

Therefore, it is understandable that the club would have higher ambitions for this season. However, considering the early outings from the team, it looks like we still need to do a lot to get back to the top.

Against Wolves and Tottenham, the Red Devils’ midfield struggled a lot. The trio of Casemiro, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes seem to lack the legs in the engine room.

Also, finding the back of the net has been hard for the Old Trafford side. Marcus Rashford does not look comfortable playing as a number nine. The only goal we have scored this season came from Raphael Varane.

Berbatov was part of the era when United challenged for every major title. Hopefully, the players will find their bearings soon and Ten Hag will be able to get the best out of the team.
