Odysseas Vlachodimos is pushing to leave SL Benfica amidst Manchester United interest
Manchester United target Odysseas Vlachodimos is pushing for a move away from SL Benfica in the ongoing transfer window, according to Record (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are looking to acquire the Greece international’s services this summer in order to bolster their goalkeeping ranks. To that end, the shot-stopper has made himself unavailable to the Portuguese outfit.
It looks like the 29-year-old is trying to force an exit from the Primeira Liga outfit in the final days of the window. But it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford side will be his next destination.
Vlachodimos made his way through the youth ranks at VfB Stuttgart before moving to Panathinaikos Athens. Subsequently, Benfica came knocking for his signature in the summer of 2018.
Since then, the Greek national has consistently been their number one. In the previous campaign, the shot-stopper made 54 appearances in all competitions for the Eagles, keeping 28 clean sheets.
Vlachodimos started in the opening two games in the 2023/24 term for the Primeira Liga outfit. However, the goalkeeper was left out of the squad entirely in their 2-0 win over Estrela in the league.
At United, the addition of Andre Onana has made up for the departure of David de Gea. The Spaniard’s contract with the club expired at the end of June and he is still a free agent.
However, the Red Devils seem to lack numbers in their shot-stopping department. Tom Heaton is on the sidelines for now. Dean Henderson has been on the bench for us in the opening two fixtures of the new season. However, the English national’s future at the Old Trafford side is uncertain.
