Chelsea set to beat Manchester United to New England Revolution shot-stopper Djordje Petrovic
Manchester United are set to be beaten by Premier League rivals Chelsea to the signing of New England Revolution shot-stopper Djordje Petrovic, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Mirror].
The Red Devils have had their eyes on the promising goalkeeper in the ongoing transfer window. However, it looks like the Blues are going to pip us to his signature.
As things stand, Dean Henderson has been linked with a move away from the Old Trafford side this summer. To that end, the club are looking to further bolster the ranks in between the sticks.
But one of the options United had on their radar, Petrovic, is nearing a £13.66 million switch from the MLS outfit to the Stamford Bridge side.
Chelsea’s shot-stopping department has lost a lot of depth this summer. First, Edouard Mendy made his way to Saudi Arabia. Subsequently, Kepa Arrizabalaga joined Real Madrid on loan recently.
As a result, the Blues have been left with Robert Sanchez as the only established goalkeeper in their ranks. Lucas Bergstrom has been on the bench for Mauricio Pochettino’s team in the first two fixtures of the new season.
Petrovic has been with New England since 2022. The Serbia international has showcased immense potential at the MLS outfit. But it remains to be seen whether the 23-year-old will be the second choice if he moves to the West London club.
At United, Erik ten Hag seems to prefer Andre Onana as his number one. The Cameroonian has put in some impressive displays for the Red Devils in the last few weeks. However, we evidently need to sort out who the 27-year-old’s backup will be.

Injuries are part and parcel of the game. Therefore, the Old Trafford side need to be prepared for it. But instead of a player like Petrovic, it would evidently be wise to get someone who is experienced and has previously played in the Premier League.
