Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana was “calm” about Wolves penalty shout
Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) had a shout for a penalty in the final minutes of the match against Manchester United, but Andre Onana was “calm” about it.
Gary O’Neil’s team visited the Red Devils’ home on 14 August in the Premier League. It was an end-to-end game at some moments as both teams created chances but were unable to finish them.
Thankfully, in the 76th minute, United managed to break the deadlock. Aaron Wan-Bissaka played the ball into the box and Raphael Varane was able to find the back of the net.
Over the course of the match, the Red Devils had other opportunities. Unfortunately, we made poor decisions in the final third and rushed our attacks on a number of occasions.
Then in stoppage time, with the Old Trafford side holding on for the three points, Onana attempted to get his hands at the end of a cross played by Wolves. However, the Cameroonian completely missed the ball.
Instead, the shot-stopper clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic. The referee did not award a penalty and the VAR concurred with Simon Hooper’s decision. Speaking to MUTV (h/t Manchester Evening News) after the match, the 27-year-old goalkeeper did not think much of the incident.
“I don’t worry at all, because at the end of the day, I make my own decision, you can make the right choice and sometimes not and at the end of the day you learn from mistakes.
“I trust the referees, what they are doing is not easy especially now with VAR. So I was calm, I knew it was just a contact in there so I’m calm and for me, I’m very happy with this victory.”
It looked like Onana was a bit lucky to get away with it. However, on closer inspection, the Cameroonian slammed into Kalajdzic after the ball had already made contact with a Wolves player.
While it could arguably have gone either way, thankfully, it was in our favour. Apart from the incident, the Cameroonian had an assured game in between the sticks on his competitive debut and picked up the club’s official Man of the Match award.
