Manchester United are plotting a move for 25-year-old Rangers shot-stopper Robby McCrorie
According to The Herald Scotland, Manchester United are eyeing a surprise move for Rangers goalkeeper, Robby McCrorie.
Even though the Red Devils successfully secured their main targets at the beginning of the transfer window, it doesn’t imply that Erik ten Hag has concluded his summer transfer dealings.
Although the team did successfully acquire Andre Onana from Inter Milan last month, there remains a noticeable shortage of goalkeepers within the squad.
David de Gea departed the club without a transfer fee, while Matej Kovar completed a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen for £7 million.
Despite Dean Henderson’s desire to move to Nottingham Forest, his plans are currently on hold due to his ongoing injury.
Consequently, he cannot serve as a suitable backup option or generate funds for the club. Additionally, Tom Heaton, the sole backup goalkeeper, is also sidelined with an injury.
Amidst these developments, Jack Butland, who was on loan at Old Trafford during the latter part of the previous season, has signed with Rangers on a free transfer.
Now, as stated by the Scottish Herald, there is a possibility of another goalkeeper, McCrorie, making a move in the opposite direction.
It is understood that the 25-year-old goalkeeper is looking for a move after Butland’s arrival at Ibrox, where the ex-Crystal Palace player has taken the role of the main goalkeeper for Rangers.
Man United are interested in capitalising on this situation and have initiated discussions with McCrorie’s representatives in recent days.
Hull City and Polish champions Rakow Czestochowa are also in the mix of potential suitors. Either of these clubs could provide the experienced keeper with the opportunity for regular playing time.
At a cost of just £1m, McCrorie would likely serve as a cost-effective choice to bolster United’s goalkeeping lineup.
However, his potential as a valuable addition is uncertain. With a mere six appearances for the Rangers since his arrival at the club in 2021, his track record is limited.
Additionally, he has earned only a single cap for Scotland in the UEFA Nations League. In our opinion, McCrorie may not be a suitable choice if the intention is to offer Onana a competitive environment.
However, if Ten Hag wants to use his funds on other positions on the field, considering a cost-effective goalkeeper does hold a degree of logic.
United’s current goalkeeping choices look limited heading into their first Premier League game of the 2023-24 season against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

There needs to be more transparency in the squad in terms of players available in a particular position. Although things might work now in the presence of Onana, a backup keeper is an absolute necessity.
